UTHOTOPIA- UNIVERSITY BUILDING DESIGN

The land that was given  for the location of the campus, is located near the edge of the city of Volos, next to the area of Palaia, which is an area of a particular historical and social importance, and facing the harbor and the sea. On a scale of the mapping of the entire city, the main difficulties have to do with the traffic network, the morphology and the architecture of the area of Palaia, and also the boundary with the sea water. By conducting a study boundary all around the area, the  problems focus on the traffic and the circulation around the area, the boundary with the sea and the connection with the river  Krafsidonas. The primary and basic objective for the  project was the formation of a space in a way that would meet the requirements and the program of the University of Thessaly, and the creation of a good atmosphere, both aesthetically and functionally. Taking in consideration  the above data given, particularly in relation to the rest of the city, basic axes were designed, that intersect the area and set some limits on the distribution of the functions requested and the installation of the required  buildings. After defining the main circulation axes, the procedure continued to the creation of some basic roads of the internal traffic network and the one which is outside the area given, for connecting the campus with the city. The traffic axes, divided the project into individual parts, which were matched with the different uses that a university campus requires. In the existing programme, new schools, workshops, administration office, student club and exhibition spaces were added. The buildings were adapted to the traffic network of cars and pedestrians, and were placed along with a public services system, meaning open parks, passages, stop signs, and also specially formed spaces for events and for any other uses.
