IMAGINE THE CITY-URBAN DESIGN IN THE CITY OF VOLOS
The intervention area covers a large part of the city, yet the access to it is quite difficult and it is limited primarily to students of the Faculty of Engineering, who also use it for a limited time. The overall picture of abandonment of the area is mainly because of the lack of the basic connection with the main fabric of the city, to the neglection of various equipment that are there (Riding Club facilities etc.), but also because a large part of the region belongs to the Port Authority and due to the reduction of its functions it is not taking advantage of the area given. The proposed redevelopment of the leisure park and the wider region in general is trying to give it functions throughout the area in order to bring life to it and turn it into a new core for the people of the city.

The first intervention point is the access to the area where there is going to be an entrance into this beyond Athinon Street and the area of Palaia, with separate entrances for cars and bikes. Then there was an attempt to reclassify the premises of the University building with the addition of an exhibition hall and a student club in an attempt for a better function of the departments, so that the students will remain in the region more than the remain today. Wanting to revitalize the area of the Horse Club, there was an attempt to connect the water plant with the river Xerias and Gulf of Pagasitikos. There was also the creation of a small forest, that connects the Horse Club with the area of the university departments, giving a free green space in the city and an area used for walking and relaxation for the residents. In an effort to increase the human activities in the region and to attract different social and age groups, sports facilities were added (such as outdoor courts and indoor sports center), area for sailing courses, theme parks based on local flora (for children and adults), an area for summer events and also a beach configuration for hosting such activities, since Volos is a coastal city but offers no beach for its inhabitants to enjoy. The proposed redevelopment of the area also uses the beach front the best way possible through a path that is placed next to the water element. This route is available to pedestrians and cyclists and for their entertainment there are areas of restaurants and cafes in a large part of the route. Finally on the southeast part of the area, there is going to be a station and a small bay for parking boats, which will help the sea connection with the city of Volos. The main connection with this station will be with the airport of Nea Anchialos, where there will be buses for the transport of passengers to the airport.
