BLOCK OF FLATS IN THESSALONIKI

The project involves the creation of a residential complex in Thessaloniki, in the block between the streets Siggrou and Fragkon. This region includes a large part of the square, ending in a corner. The remaining part is supplemented by other housing assemblies, and a church, approximately in its center. The special position of the given area raises several issues that have to do with fifinding the appropriate volumes, the user interface, as well as sightings resulting from the existence of the neighboring buildings and the proper use of the angle created by two roads. The fifirst approach starts with the creation of small volumes, which combine to create some interesting results. The volumes have dimensions of 12 * 8 cm and a height of 3 cm, close enough to the dimensions of a typical apartment under scale 1: 100.

The dimensions of the volumes were then simplified, so the combinations between them would be more flexible. There was also an analysis of the various combinations of the volumes, their binding positions, the gaps and sightings that were created, so the result was shapes of various forms and levels in the space. These shapes were combined one more time with each other and a volume large in size occurred. Then there was an attempt for the creation of a program of uses that could adapt appropriately to every shape and size. Based on the above, a complex of rectangular formations was created, which took place in all the given area of land. The program of uses resulted from the size of the formations, the opening of useful spaces, and the needs for lighting, noise and privacy. The types of spaces are the following: the ground floor, where one can see shops, galleries and stores. From the fifirst flfloor and above, the apartments are extended, which are either appropriate for families or for students, smaller ones. These floors also include public spaces for public assembly, such as a restaurant, a cafeteria, and many balconies, either public or private ones. Finally, on the seventh floor some green roofs are scattered, but there are also a few in some apartments on the other floors. The shape of the building creates arcades and openings, as well as interesting views to the Fragkon street, but also some views to the church.
